1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

I could not make it to the class, on the day of the film, but if I had to assume the class discussion I would have to assume it centered around Stanley Kubrick and his adaptation of the novel A Clockwork Orange. Prior to this film Kubrick directed A Space Oddity 2001 the big budget award winner. The next film Kubrick directed was A Clockwork Orange a low budget film that he had directed to prove to the critics that he could direct a low budget film. I would also have to assume that the film became a catapult for Malcolm McDowell, this being his breakout role.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.)

The article is a Q&A with the actor who portrays Alex, Malcolm McDowell. In the article the interviewer and the interviewe remember the legendary director and movie in a series of questions that let the reader in on behind the scenes goings.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or

change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

The article sheds light on the life of Stanley Kubrick and the movies he directed. He seemed to be a bit of a show off. He made the film to prove he could not for what the film was worth.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as

a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less

interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I

am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

A  Clockwork Orange is another first for for movie culture. Just as 2001: A Space Oddity did for ScyFy, A Clockwork Orange did for suspenseful psychological thrillers. The movie was in fact banned in England for several years due to its graphic nature. This is a film that could never have been produced years ago let alone in the 1970's. All in all it is a great film that makes its audience question our own  morality.

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
The discussion, prior to watching The Graduate, tells us that the movie was made differently than movies past. Movies had always been made for a particular audience, the older audience who grew up watching "clean" movies. This is not the case for The Graduate, for this movie was made for the younger baby boomers who had different views than their parents. This film was made for the youth who wanted a raunchier movie, a film that represented what they wanted to see which was rebellion, sex, a good music. This film could only be made in the 60's, because the old censorship program would have condemned it completely.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.)

The article begins by remember the director of the Graduate, Mike Nichols, who died last week. It then goes into the idea of remaking the movie. Not obly do I believe this is a bad idea due to it actually being another remake of a classic, but because it would not work today. I believe that this generation believes less in the idea of "selling out" than the idea of working. The reason why the Graduate worked is because the economy was so good, today that really is not the case. A job is a job and if the movie were to be remade most of its key concepts would fly over the heads of the targeted audience.

The article only supplemented what was discussed in class. I do however now see the generational gap between the baby boomers and the generation that is graduating today. The graduating class of today will go out and work where as the graduating class of the movie wanted to do what they wanted to do.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as

The plot pulls in a new audience of viewers with a storyline that holds the ideals of these new viewers at hand. The only change I would personally make would be to put more songs into the film rather than three dragged out songs.

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
In class when we first discussed the movie "The Big Sleep" we learned how the film was different from other movies. "The Big Sleep" is a type of movie named film noir, which simply means black film. This is important regarding the film because it exemplifies the ideas behind film noir. In this genre the lead tends to be a male who lacks or has a very misleading moral compass

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.)

The article, which I found, is a dedication to Boggie and the recently departed Lauren Bacall. The couple had starred in 4 films together, in this span, one of them being "The Big Sleep". The purpose of the article is not about this, however, it relates to the films genre. Movie critics have debated over the authenticity of "The Big Sleep" being a film noir. The idea of film noir is to show weakness and though Boggie does this in his own way, the tarnished knight rescuing the damsel in distress, it is not really a film noir.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or

change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
Being it a debate the authenticity of the film's genre is up for scrutinization. It does have some aspects of a film noir but on the other hand it lacks. Reading and going over everything I believe the film is a film noir.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as

The film itself was a well thought up movie with many plot twists and turns just as a detective movie should have. Of course the pairing of Boggie and Bacall is an electric duo that make the characters pop even more than if the characters were portrayed by other actors. Regarding the film's status as a film noir has little concern in this screen report because it is still a decent movie.

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

What was discussed in class last week was simply how great the movie Casablanca was and how it swept the Academy Awards. The movie was nominated for almost every major category of the Academy Awards, which turned out to be eight categories, still winning three. This was such a great triumph because Casablanca was not supposed to be as great as it was made to be. First it starred Humphrey Bogart, who had previously only played the role of the villain; many thought this would translate into Casablanca and turn off movie goers. Second, and the primary reason is that it was produced in a "mass production" style where movies were put out quickly and almost systematically. These two reasons made the triumph of Casablanca even more amazing.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.)

and summarize the content. You may use the library or the internet.

Casablanca may be seventy two years old, but it is still considered one of the greatest films of all time. Why is it so? Even to this day quotes from this movie live and thrive unconsciously in today's psyche. The movie is in the top five movies of all time in about eight different categories, but why is this the case? Is it the originality of the movie, the quotes, the actors, or a combination of all three. It was probably because it was the perfect for the year it came out pushing the US into World War II.

The article exemplifies everything mentioned in the class from the famous quotes to the quality that became of the movie. Rick is the suave hero every man wants to be where as Ilsa is the defining role for female viewers. The movie is engraved into our psyche and for that reason it is one of the greatest movies of all time.

Casablanca came out in the perfect year for it to become the perfect movie. The year is 1941 and the US has entered World War II the following year Casablanca comes out and it personifies every attribute Americans wanted to portray through Bogart's character Rick. Every American male became wanted to be Rick and over the years the idea of Rick still stayed with us, even 72 years later. Casablanca is an amazing movie the script is well put together the quotes are memorable and the acting troupe is perfect for the roles they are portraying. All and all Casablanca is perfect in every aspect of the definition.

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

As ironic as it may sound, but Gone With the Wind is actually one of the first movies to begin the "Golden Age" of cinematography. I say ironic because it is a movie, I believe, should have been made twenty years before. This is but one story that could be told about Gone With the Wind. Another thing that could be said is that its another book made into a movie, many were found during this time. Gone With the Wind also helped break down racial barriers in the movie industry. Hattie McDaniel, the woman who played Mammy, actually won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but was not able to attend the movie's premiere a sign that the movie industry and the US still had its prejudices toward African Americans.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  You may use the library or the Internet.

The article discusses Clark Gable's fight to desegregate both the set of Gone With the Wind and maybe even the south. His crusade begins with a single individual, a friend of his by the name of Bluett who was an actor, singer, dancer who got a role as an extra on Gone With the Wind but was uncredited. Later, the two would fight for desegregation in the wash rooms. In the south the wash rooms were segregated but when a protest failed to desegregate them Clark Gable reportedly called up the higher ups and threatened his lead role status and the bathrooms almost instantly became desegregated. Clark would attempt to stand up for the African American actors one more time when they could not attend the premiere of the movie, which took place in the south. Clark wanted more of an out pour, but it was reported that Hattie McDaniel told him that it was alright because she did not want it to escalate.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

Gone With the Wind, a satirical film about southern plantation owners, was one of the first movies to place a leading African American role, Hattie McDaniel, in a good light. She is seen to run the house and the family. So if this is the case why did the producers segregate behind the scenes when it appeared the were desegregating the business on the screen? In my opinion, the movie was made to mock the slave system; this is poorly done in the movie because some of the slaves were not as powerful as they should have been. I had hoped that everything about Gone With The Wind would be progressive and not some of it.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

Gone With The Wind in my own opinion is an all around bad movie, its as simple as that. The movie, itself, should have been made twenty years prior. The problem with the movie is that if it was attempting to satire the southern plantation owners it fell short when their slaves actually seem to enjoy being servants. If the three slaves simply protested more, rather just Mamie who ran the household, a more foreseeable satire could be seen. The script was awful and even the overly dramatized cinematography shots are too much even for this movie. All aspects of this film are not enjoyable, the only good thing that came out of this movie was Clark Gable's attempt at desegregating the set.

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The class, prior to the film, primarily discussed the works of primarily Ford and the evolution of the western genre. From its roots in New Jersey/New York in "The Great Train Robbery" "westerns" would move out west to match their genre ambiance. Ford would go on to make several westerns that circled around a hero, more than not John Wayne, who started out to be the quintessential "good guy" but would eventually evolve, until the end of the westerns during the seventies. This evolution would become that of an anti-hero who the obeys by his own moral code and leaves the justifications of his actions to the audience watching the film. "Stagecoach" was primarily, because it was an earlier film, a movie with the "known good guy" who may have only followed by his own moral code but still had an obvious role as the "good guy" in the film.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.)
and summarize the content. You may use the library or the internet.

The evolution of the western can be measured up into three different waves, according to the article. The first wave of films came from the original westerns, the silent westerns that would define the genre for its first thirty years. "The Great Train Robbery" becomes the poster movie for the genre until the creation of the "talkies". The second wave comes from the beginning of the talkie westerns including "Stagecoach" which saved the dying genre; these movies would re-create the genre. The third wave is that of the adult psychological westerns during the post war era. These movies introduced themes like the antihero where the line of good and evil was frayed. After this wave the genre began to die out, most likely due to the end of the rural-urban transformation period. During this time, there was no need to see westerns when many people had lived in suburbia for years.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or
change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

The article adds on to the reasons why we needed the western genre in a post war time. The article points out the rural-urban transformation, that took place after World War II, became the reason behind the rural simpler time known in westerns. By the 1960s, the western had peaked both as a viable Hollywood commodity and as a national myth to ease America's rural-urban transformation, in part brought low by a combination of market saturation and generic exhaustion."

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a

"Stagecoach" flat out saved the western genre. For this reason alone "Stagecoach" should be held at a higher standard than other films. Beside that point the film itself was quite good, it is a Ford film so the script can be a bit dry at points, but the idea of the movie was a fun, exciting one. "Stagecoach" created movies like "The Searchers" "The Rio Bravo" and the spaghetti westerns. "Stagecoach" almost reaches back to the old silent films, how John Ford was taught in the art of filming, because of this we get the up close action shot of John Wayne and scenes like this.

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The theme around last week's class was the beginning of the self censoring Hollywood that would dominate the movie business and control what films were made and not. Hollywood censorship came from the many scandals involving stars from back in the silent movie days. Stars like Fatty Arbuckle and the Pickford/Fairbank affair left Hollywood with a mark that led many to believe that Hollywood was out of control and needed to be controlled and censored. Instead of having the government interfere directly it requested Mr. Hays to self censor films while working inside of Hollywood and not directly working for the government. From this office Hays had the ability to control what movies made it onto the big screen. No longer did movie goers see attractive women in loss fitting clothes but an image of the "well respected" woman who would wear business suits and hold down a job. We see this in "It Happened One Night" a movie without passion even though the lead roles are falling for each other and even sleep in the same room together. A divider seperates the two as if to prevent any passion at all. This was the Hollywood of the early 20th century and the moral code would control the distribution of movies until the 1960's.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  You may use the library or the Internet.

The article surrounds the beginning of the Hollywood Censorship and the Hays Office. Movies didn't fully bloom until the 1920's but even then movies were silent and were full of slapstick humor, however that would change with the advent of the talkie. Religious leaders believed that the talkies were filled with smut that was tempting the youth. The religious leaders would then complain to the government and from there Hollywood allowed someone regulate censorship rather than the government regulate movies itself. Hays helped sell the idea of censorship by helping the studio's money woes after the stock market crash. " Hays sold the Code as the money-saving measure they were searching for. Instead of paying to revise the film after the censorship boards made their edits, the studios could simply follow the Code before making their movies and everyone would be happy. The Code was adopted in 1930."

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.   How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

The article, found on PBS, was an article regarding Hollywood censorship and how the Hay's Office was in control of movie distribution starting at about 1934. "It Happened One Night" was one of the first movies to be effected by the censoring. Images of the bashful Colbert in full pajamas seperated by a full blanket wall would ot have been see years prior. Hays reportedly sold studios on the idea; "Hays convinced the studios that accepting the Code was the safest and cheapest answer to their troubles. If the movie industry policed itself, it could ward off the high probability of government intervention." Instead he became a powerhouse, himself, in the movie business by allowing some movies to pass but not others.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.  I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

"It Happened One Night" was a fun quircky movie about total strangers who wind up falling for each other. It is a tale that could even stand strong today, but other than it being a fun movie, it is a movie that stands the test of time because it was one of the first of the Hays movies that were censored by the Hays' Office. It was a different sort of film, it was a movie that lacked passion but still audience members felt the love between the two and the tension they create. This is the sort of movie that could be made today and still speak to movie goers.
