1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

What was discussed in class last week was simply how great the movie Casablanca was and how it swept the Academy Awards. The movie was nominated for almost every major category of the Academy Awards, which turned out to be eight categories, still winning three. This was such a great triumph because Casablanca was not supposed to be as great as it was made to be. First it starred Humphrey Bogart, who had previously only played the role of the villain; many thought this would translate into Casablanca and turn off movie goers. Second, and the primary reason is that it was produced in a "mass production" style where movies were put out quickly and almost systematically. These two reasons made the triumph of Casablanca even more amazing.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.)

and summarize the content. You may use the library or the internet.

Casablanca may be seventy two years old, but it is still considered one of the greatest films of all time. Why is it so? Even to this day quotes from this movie live and thrive unconsciously in today's psyche. The movie is in the top five movies of all time in about eight different categories, but why is this the case? Is it the originality of the movie, the quotes, the actors, or a combination of all three. It was probably because it was the perfect for the year it came out pushing the US into World War II.

Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the

related article but do not plagiarize any content.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or

change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

The article exemplifies everything mentioned in the class from the famous quotes to the quality that became of the movie. Rick is the suave hero every man wants to be where as Ilsa is the defining role for female viewers. The movie is engraved into our psyche and for that reason it is one of the greatest movies of all time.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as

a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less

interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I

am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

Plagiarism Statement: Attach this to the end of every journal assignment.

Casablanca came out in the perfect year for it to become the perfect movie. The year is 1941 and the US has entered World War II the following year Casablanca comes out and it personifies every attribute Americans wanted to portray through Bogart's character Rick. Every American male became wanted to be Rick and over the years the idea of Rick still stayed with us, even 72 years later. Casablanca is an amazing movie the script is well put together the quotes are memorable and the acting troupe is perfect for the roles they are portraying. All and all Casablanca is perfect in every aspect of the definition.
